The problems with the three-piece crankshaft pulleys on S55 engines are well known (see photo 6) and are the main cause of S55 engine failure.
The crankshaft bolt can work loose due to engine vibration, which means that at the slightest loss of clamping torque, the alignment of the timing gears will no longer be correct. With well-known, potentially disastrous consequences
Installing a capture plate is simpler than the complete hub (also called a crank hub), but remains an insufficient first level of security for high-power builds. The radical solution remains a hub machined from solid, or even pinned to the crankshaft nose for the wildest builds.
2 versions, to choose according to your level of tuning:
- Standard crank hub (up to stage 1)
- Pinned crank hub (from stage 2)
Note that the pinned version is supplied with the tooling needed to drill the crankshaft nose to insert the pins, which completely prevent any rotation.
Team Lupos tip:
"For track cars and high-power cars, you should plan to upgrade this locking plate AND install the one-piece pulley kit"
