Preparing a BMW M3 F80 / M4 F82 for the track

The M3 F80 and M4 F82 are excellent trackday bases: a stiff chassis, a generous twin-turbo S55 and a fast DKG gearbox. But the S55 has a few known weak points that quickly show up on track or after a remap. On an F8x, you always start by improving reliability, then move on to braking and chassis.

1. Make the S55 reliable first

The stock crank hub is held by friction only. Under high torque it can slip and throw off the valve timing: this is the main cause of S55 engine failure. The MMX one-piece crank hub or, as a first step, the pulley reinforcement kit solve the problem. Next comes cooling: DO88 oil cooler, Mosselman oil thermostat, and the DO88 charge pipes that replace the stock plastic pipes. Full details in our article Making the BMW S55 reliable: the 6 weak points to anticipate.

2. Braking: thermal endurance

On track, the stock brakes heat up quickly. Depending on budget: track pads (Pagid RSL1, Endless, Ferodo), Motul RBF fluid, braided brake lines and a cooling kit. For intensive use, Girodisc floating rotors or the AP Racing PRO5000R big brake kit.

3. Chassis: geometry and damping

The stock adjustment range quickly limits camber and toe. Millway parts (adjustable toe arms, spherical bearings, top mounts) provide the range needed to run semi-slicks. For damping, TracTive electronically controlled dampers retain EDC compatibility. For wheels, Racing Division Pista wheels.

4. Track-oriented maintenance

Track use shortens service intervals: Motul 300V engine oil, and a DKG gearbox fluid change every other season with track use. Unsure about priorities? Use the configurator or get in touch: we advise on every project as if it were our own.
