Preparing a BMW M2 F87 for the track
Compact with a short wheelbase, the M2 F87 is a very popular BMW base for getting started or progressing on track. Mind the version: the "phase 1" M2 uses the N55, while the M2 Competition and M2 CS use the S55 from the M3/M4. Weak points and parts differ, so always check the compatibility listed on each product page.
1. Engine reliability: N55 or S55
On the N55 M2, cooling is the priority: Mosselman oil thermostat, DO88 auxiliary water radiator and DO88 boost pipes. On the M2 Competition and CS, the S55 requires dealing with the crank hub, which is held by friction only: the MMX one-piece crank hub eliminates this risk. The DO88 charge pipes replace the plastic pipes that tend to crack. More details in BMW S55 crank hub: why it slips and how to secure it.
2. Braking
The M2 has good stock brakes, provided they get the right pads. Endless ME20 pads finally let you make full use of the F8x stock brakes, combined with Motul RBF fluid, Goodridge brake lines and a cooling kit suited to your version. For intensive use: Girodisc rotors or the AP Racing PRO5000R big brake kit.
3. Chassis
The stock adjustment range quickly limits camber and toe. Millway toe arms, spherical bearings and adjustable top mounts open up the adjustment range. The differential raise kit protects the diff on a lowered car, and bump steer / roll center correction spacers restore the geometry. For damping, TracTive electronically controlled dampers. For wheels, Racing Division Pista or VR5.
4. Maintenance
Motul engine oil suited to your engine, a DKG fluid change every other season with track use, and 75W140 differential oil for the limited-slip diff. Need help prioritising?
